Frederic Remington
Born in Canton, New York, in 1861, Remington attended Yale Art School and played football and was a heavyweight boxer. He traveled to the Western Frontier to follow his artistic vision. In 1905 Remington wrote: "Art is a she-devil of a mistress, and if at times in early days she would not even stoop to my way of thinking, I have persevered and will so continue."
Remington was a personal friend of Teddy Roosevelt and spent a year with the "Rough Riders" in Cuba in 1898. He was a contemporary of the legendary Charles M. Russell. He was primarily known as a "frontier painter".
His sculpting years only lasted from 1895, with his first sculpture "Bronco Buster" to his last, "Stampede," shortly before his death in 1909. Yet, in those 14 short years of sculpting, his body of work is incredible. His portrayal of the "American West as it was" has made him America's most recognized Western Artist. We also owe him our gratitude as a historian.
The sculptures offered here are re-casts from his own originals, most of which are said to have been cast at Roman Foundry on Long Island. These are as exactly reproduced as possible.
