Hunting Dogs
As descendants of the wolf, dogs are by nature hunters and scavengers. Man is also a natural hunter/scavenger, so these two totally different species of life formed a symbiotic relationship millennium ago. No doubt the basis of that relationship was the sharing of food. The wolf was faster and could outrun and catch his prey. Man was more cunning and could trap and dispatch his prey, and together dog and man shared in their fortunes and misfortunes.
Mankind's loyalty to dogs is so strong that we often say "A dog is man's best friend." We assume anyone who would mistreat a dog is not a very good human being, and a dog that bites a human being is "a bad dog."
